Yes Judy, the back of my hair is representative of the front. It is all very short now. I used to have long hair and wear it up all the time, but got tired of the contstant headaches caused by the weight of my hair. I'm afraid if I want a hat to stay put, I buy one just a tad snug and pull it on tight. Doesn't look elegant that way though, but it keeps the sun off my face and neck. ;-)

Thanks Judy! Actually my hair isn't much longer than Carolivy's looks. I was hoping to get it cut once or twice before the wedding. hmmmm Maybe I will have to let my hat fly if it decides to do so. I have to have a hat as I get terrible reactions to the sun.

So do I. That is why I buy a hat a size too small and jam it on to make sure it doesn't come off except in a realllllly strong wind! ;-)

Okay, so I read this whole thread yesterday and, at the end, I couldn't think of a thing to add. Today, while checking blog updates, I found this entry and it made me think of this thread. They're not tatted and they're actually bobbins for bobbin lace, but I thought that it might give you some ideas --it also made me wonder if the bobbins used could be fashioned into hatpins. I don't know (I don't think I've worn any kind of cap or hat since I was a year old, LOL), but I just wanted to share the link just in case it could work... Especially since they obviously have an "eye" which could be used to incorporate a tatted design...

those bobbins are lovely...i have no intention of ever doing anything that would require me to have any, but they are so pretty I would just love to have them "just because"!!!!

Nice idea for the hat pin.
I read your blog. I have a theory about my learning. The first time through, its almost impossible to catch all the important points; attention is on learning the nouns. You proceed as much as you can, and then take a break. Now go back and start over. By this time you know the lingo, vocabulary if you will, and you can concentrate on the verbs instead of the nouns. The third time its like building the sentence, with adjectives, adverbs that are the variations. The more I do it the better it gets.

Did you ever think of going for a rococo-style hat? Bergère it's called in our part of the world. It's an absolutely flat straw hat with a special (often lace) band you knot at the nape of the neck. These hats - even though hatpins are usually used when wearing them - don't really need a hatpin if they're fixed well, the tension between flat hat and headband will keep them in place.
You don't need long hair to wear them, too. The better half has a Bergère to fit one of her rococo gowns and it keeps on tight even without hatpins. You only have to make sure that the tension is good.
I think those beautifully fit with wedding gowns.

Here are two pictures of Rapunzellen wearing the Bergère. She did not have any hatpins that day and was wearing the hat for at least half a day straight.

Those are great!! I've been trying to decide if I wanted to add extra to the hat along with the pins, maybe an inner band and an outer one. The bobbins are so pretty, but I think you need a good length of "pin" to get it through the hat, into the hair and back out again. I did find a hair pin in my stash that was about 6" long with just a beaded stopper on the end. It's not quite sharp enough, but I've never been overly fond of the hairpins, so if I mess them up I won't be too upset. I've been looking at some of Linda Davies flowers thinking they'd be nice to have on the end - just large enough so it stands out but not so large it takes over the hat (even if it is plain white). I love the idea of the band around the back of the head too! That way the hatpin could be for decoration.

I can just see me with my hair wadded on top of my head, a hatpin through it, and a strong wind taking the hat and my hair with it.

So many WIP's, so little time...

Love the idea of the flat straw hat with the band to hold them in place. Very nice!
