    Default Altin Basak thread

Can someone who uses this tell me about this thread. I ordered two balls of it that are 100 gr and I have no idea how much thread that is. The listing said that it was = to size 30.

The balls will probably be marked as size 50 which is approximately equal in size to DMC Cebelia 30. I would say the Altin Basak would be about 2/3 of the amount of yardage as a ball of Cebelia but I'm not certain. Lily Morales used to have a comparison chart but I don't think it's posted on line anywhere. Someone who uses Altin Basak more than me would be a lot more knowledgeable as I gave all but 4 balls of the AB away a couple of years ago. I just didn't like the thread also it does come in a lot of wonderful colors and does work up well but it has a soft "hand" and takes a lot of stiffening if being used for 3D projects ... at least IMHO.
    Happy Tatting!!

I use it, & I agree with TeresaW.... I've had a love-hate relationship with it... It's very soft, but it's also shiny & has alot of colors that are lovely... It's numbered 50 but it's 30 or so. I've used it with both Flora & Lizbeth number 20 without any problem as long as I made sure not to get my tension too tight. I actually like it better than Lizbeth, as far as the thread goes, but Lizbeth's colors are better & it works better for things I'd want to be stiff without tons of starch or whatever you use for stiffening.

A 100 gr ball must be a pretty good size ball. My Altin Basak balls are 20 gr. DMC Cebelia size 30, 50 gr. ball, is 520 meters of thread, while the size 20 ball of the same weight is 380 meters of thread. Does that give you something to compare to?

Altin Basak is lovely, but people who are really tight tatters seem not to like is as much, because it isn't 6-cord. I've used it a lot, and the only problem I ever had was with one ball of the dark purple which wasn't dyed all the way through. It showed little white spots where the joins came, and if any unpicking had to be done. That was years ago, though, and I've never had any more problems with it.
It's lovely for doilies and edgings, but, as everyone has said, is probably not stiff enough for 3-D tatting.

Thank you it does. My thread was not a great bargain at 8.00 a ball + shipping but I don't feel like it was too awful either. The seller agreed to drop the shipping in half if I would take more so I need to think about it but hate to commit until I actually see the first of it.
