Vonnie, Susan has hit on what I was going to suggest. The same website also has details on a book called 'Threads for Lace' which is written by Brenda Paternoster. She does thread weight comparisons for new threads and old, long discontinued threads, and the list is growing all the time. She does constant updates via her website for new threads which people send to her for a comparison. I have a copy and have found it invaluable when trying to substitute for long discontinued threads, and comparing a thread in a pattern with what I have on hand.
There are a number of different systems for measuring thread weight, and not all manufacturers follow the same system, hence the confusion. Sometimes the one manufacturer will use different thread weight systems on different threads - it can be very difficult to compare between them. This is a short article written by a miniature knitting designer about understanding the different thread measurement systems. It refers specifically to sewing threads and 1 ply yarn etc which are used for miniature work, but will still give you some insight into the different systems.
