    Default great doily

I found perfect doily in one auction - http://moda.aukro.cz/krajka-i1462395857.html

There isn't written it is needle work, so I think it is machine embroidery (it is very cheap too), but I love it and I am thinking about making it. A little while I thought it is only needle work, now I think it is something like "richelieu" combined with needle work. Is that true? If it is, what material will be best for it? And haven't you some urls when I can find stitches for filled places?

It looks like mostly if not all needlelace. Couple of areas hard to tell but seems to be all needlelace.

The photo might be fooling my old eyes, but I think it looks a lot like a combination the pulled work and cut work that my grandmother used to do. Both are a kind of embroidery. In pulled work, a number of stitches are worked around an area and pulled tightly to pull the threads apart, thus creating the smaller openings. In cut work, a border is created in embroidery around an area that is then carefully cut out (hence the name), thus leaving the larger openings in the work. You're right, Frakria, it is a lovely doily. Did you purchase it? Perhaps you could take a better photo of it.

I asked seller if it is machine embroidery or not and he doesn't now. I think it can be hand work, so I'll try purchase it - I hope I'll win.

That really is a shame as it looked so pretty. Do you think there is any way to repair it?

Well, machine lace has been the predominant lace for many, many years. The art and science of machine lace making is such that several years ago, when the haute couture houses wanted lace made to their specification that their concepts were too complex even for them to afford it. Their creations would have been too expensive for the industry to make a profit. So I would not be too disappointed with this piece. When the lace is good enough, and this piece certainly is, reproducing the design by hand would not be very difficult (assuming you know how to make needle lace). The pattern observes all the correct methods of making needle lace.

The only real difficulty is whether you want to learn needle lace to that depth of knowledge. There are carvings by Grinling Gibbons and other marble statues that reproduce this type of Venetian needle lace almost stitch for stitch and can act as a very correct pattern. A line drawing from this lace could be a very satisfactory pattern.

    What a challenge!
