All pearl cotton is an embroidery thread that is 2 ply with 2 large plies that loosely twisted (loosely twisted = floss). Valdani Pearl cotton is very nice to work with, but its sizes are about one size larger in other pearl cottons. For example, a DMC size 5 is about the same size as Valdani size 8. The range of pearl cotton sizes is 3, 5, 8, 12, 16, 20 (I think these numbers were pulled out of a hat!)

I have a number of balls of this - the colors are so beautiful. It is very soft though - since it is much looser - but the results are worth it if you want something soft - such as a bookmark. Mistakes can be a bit more troublesome to pull out. Some of those varigated colors are almost like watercolors.

Yes, it is soft, a LOT softer than either DMC or Valdani perle cottons; but it's designed for embroidery, so that is no surprise. I was thrilled to actually find a box of the "Watercolour Monet" colour in one of the local quilt shops, and I am afraid my willpower didn't even make it as far as the clasp of my handbag on that day because it was so tactile and beautiful! Comes in a cute little cardboard box, and I am keeping it for a very special doily. I take it out every so often to pet it. It will almost be a shame to use it.

Aha... So, it is worth to buy :)
Thank you all for your answers!
I used DMC Perle 12 -- and liked it very much ) generally because of its softness.
If Valdani is softer -- that would be excellent :)

So glad I am not the only one. I do not have any of the Valdani but may get some now. I do this with the hand-dyed threads fav dau gave me every so often.

I think it is very soft and tended to 'Lint" I bought one ball to try because it matched some sheets and thought it would make a great tatted edge to trim them. Much to soft and would not stand up to a couple of different patterns I tried. So it got moved to don't care for pile. Has worked up fine for tiny flowers and butterflies that I enhanced thanks you card and gift tags.

Would not re-commend spending money on more than one ball just to say you have tried it.
