I was hoping somebody might be able to help me out. I have a crochet pattern that calls for N. 12/3=8 Cotton Thread but I'm accustomed to thread sizes, 10, 20, 30 , 50 etc. Does anybody out there know what size 12/3=8 might be equivalent too?

Pearl cotton (DMC) is usually in sizes 12 or 8. 3 means 3 ply, so I guess the pattern calls for a softer thread than the tatting one. Hope it helps
I did a search on that thread and I really didn't come up with a whole lot, however, in many of the blurbs it says to use a size 1 crochet hook. So, whatever size thread you'd use a size 1 hook for, I'd say that's fairly equivalent. :)
Welcome to another beautiful day in Paradise!
I would say it's a size 10 thread then (or you can even use what is sold as Bedspread Cotton, it's just a little thicker if I remember correctly but about the same size).
Thanks everyone.
I did find somewhere that its 3 ply. The pattern is for a crocheted baby/toddler/child's dress so gauge is important. The pattern calls for a 1.25mm hook. There is a link in the pattern for thread but it goes to a Russian ( I think) website with no English option. I'm thinking it may be size 8 thread but it doesn't look like pearl cotton in the photos.

The pattern is from here. I'd love to make it for my niece.

The dress shown on the Etsy site is done with size 10 crochet cotton. I have done a lot of crocheting with it and done some baby clothes as well. You should have a guage listed with the pattern so you can try different sized hooks until you get the right guage. You won't always use the same size hook as the pattern calls for to get the correct guage.
Thanks,
I don't see where it says size 10 on the etsy website and unfortunately the pattern doesn't specify gauge just hook size (1.25mm) and N. 12/3=8 thread. I noticed that the etsy website says 1.0mm hook which is why I'm a bit confused.
It doesn't say size 10. I've just worked with that size thread enough that I recognise the way it works up. If it were done in anything smaller it would be for a doll...larger and it would be for a todler. A 1.25mm hook is a size 9, so a 1mm will probably be an 11 (a 10 is 1.15mm). This also tells me the thread can't be any larger than a size 10. The difference between the hooks is probably just a matter of personal tension. I crochet tight so always us a size (or 2) larger than the pattern calls for or my pieces would be too small.
It doesn't say anyplace on the pattern that rows 1-? should be a certain size?
Nope, there is no information about gauge. The different pattern sizes are accomplished be using different numbers of motifs for the yoke/top part of the dress.
Thanks for the information about thread size. I haven't crocheted with size 10 in a long time.
If it is done with motifs then maybe you can measure the chest size and work from there. What size were you going to try to make and I'll find my book and tell you what size the chest is. Then you can figure out how many motifs to make by making 1 and seeing how big it is. Then you will know if you need a larger or smaller hook or if you chose the correct size to start with. ;-)
