Hi everyone!
I was tatting a pattern from an old workbasket pattern and need help. I think they left out a piece of the pattern. Can someone work one up and tell me if it is just me? I am so confused!
Thanks!

Hi everyone!

Well, you are having trouble because they left out a bunch of stuff!
Here is the corrected pattern and I made it all one piece
FAN
vsp = very small joining picot
lj = lock join
DNR = Do Not Reverse
rw = reverse work
Begin with continuous thread with a chain. Start the chain on a paper clip to keep a picot open at the end.
CH: 8 vsp 8 vsp 16 rw
R: 1 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 6 (8 picots) rw
Join to first picot
CH: 16 (join to the picot in the starting chain or the thread above the lock join in the previous repeat) rw
R: 4 - 4 rw
CH: 8 (join to the picot in the starting chain or the thread above the lj in the previous repeat) rw
R: 8 - 8 rw
CH: 8 (join to the picot in the starting chain or the thread above the lj in the previous repeat) rw
R: 12 -12 rw
CH: 6 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 6 (5 picots) lock join (lj) to picot of first ring DNR
CH: 8 lj to picot of next ring DNR
CH: 8 lj to picot of last ring DNR
CH 16 lj to next picot of the beginning ring
Repeat 6 times
After the last repeat,
CH: 16, join to lj, 8, join to lj, 8 join to lj end
Having had just a quick look it does appear that there are some instructions missing, after R of 4 ds,------------------------rw. R of 12 ds etc
It could have been R of 4 ds, p , 4 ds, cl r, rw, ch 8 ds, join to small p, rw, R of 8 ds, p, 8 ds, cl r, rw, ch 8 join to small p, rw, R of 12 ds etc.
happy tatting Josie
I see that Patty has given you a better answer.

I made this quite a few years ago. I don't remember that I had trouble with the pattern. What issue did you find the pattern in?
Come see me on my blog!

Some patterns would be reused. This edition just got mangled. Half of the 8 - 8 ring was left out, the chain counts are missing on the repeat. Just poor editing.
Re-used pattern, indeed. This is from an era when a linotype machine was in vogue. At " Ring 4 ds, " at least two lines of type got lost when they decided to save it/use it again. Each line was prepared individually, and assembled in columns, with (continued) to the next column or page. When you save those pieces of lead, its very easy to drop one or two in the process of eliminating the "continued on page 18" and the "from page 13" that you want to throw away.
What is a lock join?

Thank you so much patty!!
How interesting! Thank you Judy :)
