I love the idea of this challenge but I've spent the last year trying to find someone to teach. Finally found one!! it's a start...

What Judith said is so true - it's making sure they have the resources to help them continue learning and fire their imaginations so they'll want to stay.

So, even though the person I'll be teaching is someone I see on a more regular basis, having a short list of resources to hand someone when they show interest would be handy; I'm thinking half a tri-fold brochure (easy enough to lay out, more room for info, not too big but not too small).

Suggestions on what to include? (InTatters goes without saying... :D )

Once upon a time we talked about a "business card" that could be handed out with the URL for In Tatters. I still think that's a fast way to circulate the info. Now,, where are those sheets of pre scored card stock that I can print some up on.

So, today I took my tatting to Church with me and as I work in the library there I have times when I'm standing around... so I tatted :) .... I had 3 different ladies tell me that they learned to tat years ago but had forgotten all about it.... One said it was too hard and tedious... I will work on showing her otherwise ... and one was very interested in going home and finding her shuttles.... when I pointed out that Hobby Lobby (Yes! I did find that we have one in the area! Happy Dance! ) had thread, shuttles, tatting needles, and other tatting supplies...( just in case she couldn't find hers) she seemed very interested.... I shall have to follow up each week and keep encouraging her. All in all it was a good day !

I am doing a weekend of festivals in September that I am tatting for.....I'm probably the youngest tatter in the area (I'm 25). One of the festivals is being put on by the museum I am the collections manager (and so far, only staff) for. The other is being put on by a local historical society.....both places would be really good areas for generating new interest in the craft and there's a few quilt shops in the area I may be able to work with to do classes. Unfortunately, however, I will not be able to meet this year's quota as grad school starts again in two weeks!

I was talking with two different friends recently who expressed an interest in learning to tat, so we'll be getting together soon so I can teach them. Add those two more to my list. And I have another class on Saturday with three signed up so far. That brings my count up to 29 so far this year. Woo hoo!

I demonstrated to a lady in a local bead store how to tat. She was totally intrigued and I think she'll go online to learn more. She's not truly local (about an hour's drive away--I was on a trip), so I can't stop in regularly to check up on her. I do go that way fairly often, so I will drop by and see if she's truly learned. I showed her needle tatting, and she kept saying, "Is that all?" and couldn't believe how easy it was. A good ice breaker is to wear tatted earrings!

I have another couple of victims, uh, candidates in mind for some lessons. :)

I demonstrated the tatting at a local craft show last weekend and you would not believe the number of requests I got asking me if I taught classes on it!!!! Luckily, I had already started arranging things with one of the local fiber shops to teach tatting (both the needle and shuttle methods) in January. The shop already carries Lizbeth cotton, and on Friday I stopped in to let the owner know about all the requests for classes I had received during the craft show. She also asked me where she could order shuttles in bulk.

I have also received quite a few requests for lessons from students down at school who are interested in learning, so I may just try arranging things with the art department even though I'm a history/anthropology major.

I sense good times ahead for Western New York & Northern Pennsylvania!

I have tought 2 of my friends to tat but one of the recently told me she wants to go back to crochet. So, I told her about cro-tat, hopefully I can get her hooked on that while we both learn to cro-tat. Then, I also need to tat more at the complex swimming pool the ladies that are watching their charges where showing some interest the last time I was there. Maybe I can get one to learn. She was asking me if I sell my work but so far I have only given them away.
Try, try, and try again...until the out come is presentable at least.....gc

San Luis Obispo area in CA has an annual arts festival. A friend will be one of the official open houses to exhibit her weavings for the first time. She's invited me to sit in her studio with her, tat, and even sell some of my tatting if I want to. OOOH yes. Can't wait. I need to get busy on some earrings! I'm afraid if I take my motifs that I'll be tempted to sell them off. I don't wear earrings. I also need some business cards... got to get busy.
