I just thought of this & should've posted it earlier, but there are Lady Hoare type shuttles made of various types of wood for sale one Etsy. I forget the name of the seller, but if you search "tatting" (on my screen at least) they pretty much always come up on the first page for around $2.50 US. Good luck!

I only worry on the train when I'm sitting in the "Quiet Ride" car. But the train operating is still louder than the shuttle plinking away.

Not everyone likes them, but I love my flat shuttles. You just have to be sure your hands are very clean, because the thread is exposed. I have some beautiful ones from Grizzly Mountain Arts. I believe there are some flat shuttles listed on eBay, and PattyD's husband has made some lovely acrylic Celtic shuttles. I received mine this week, and I'm looking forward to using them!

There is a shuttlemaker here in Spokane that is making and selling flat shuttles on eBay. I just got two of them this week, one is made of stone and the other wood. I've never used te flat ones much, only collected them, but these are very nice and reasonably priced. I first found about about him when he contacted me about Shuttlebirds in April. I'm still waiting to hear if he will be coming as a vendor. His eBay store is called 2hellmans.

I just got some of the new Celtic shuttles too - one pair for me and one for a Shuttlebirds door prize.

Frazzletat, I think I found that guy and I've bid on a couple of his shuttles. Fingers crossed.

Diane, I was thinking the same thing--that I will need to be careful about keeping my hands clean. Flat shuttles are not for the sweaty-palm season, I think, either! I guess I can throw a small package of hand wipes in my bag.

Thanks, squeeky, for this tip! I tried it on my worn-out Birch shuttle (Aero-style), and now I can use it again! (Actually, I put tape on the knobs on the inside of the shuttle rather than the bobbin teeth — it works!)

I received the shuttles from 2hellmanns. They are beautiful and so light and smooth. I'm really pleased.

I also bought some shrinky-dink material! I'm looking forward to designing my own shuttles.

I can tat silently with an aero - as long as you alk the thread off the bobbin you can keep it very quiet. Alternatively look at the fat shapes - the noise is generally the points snapping together when the thread is released.

I find my old (English) Aeros click but most of my modern ones don't - they seem to loose their "noise" fairly quickly. I adjust the tension if needed with little o-rings and they are lovely and silent to tat with.

O rings? I never thought of that and I have been fighting with the page hole stickys, replacing them frequently. hmmmmmm, now to find some of DH's O rings. hmmmmm better ask, I do dislike it when he messes with my project supplies.
