Join the chain to the base of the first ring, tie it off, cut the thread (sew in the ends, if you want)

    Reload and start row 2

(There is a technique called "split chains" or sometimes also called "climbing out of the row" which allows you to continue patterns like this without cutting and starting again but if you're new to tatting it's easier just to tie off and start anew. I've been tatting for over 20 years and I still tie off far more often than I climb out)

Right, there is a chain at th end..... ring, chain, ring, chain,....When you finish the last chain, take a crochet hook and go through the base of the first chain... so you're back attaching the end of the last chain to the beginning of the first chain. pull up a loop and do a join to that loop like a picot join. There are ways to avoid cutt and tie, but I think you're not ready for that, so cut, tie and hide ends, and then start fresh making rings and chains for the second row.

Thanks so much for all the help. Finished row 1 and almost done with row 2---takes me forever.
