Default Tatting supplies in Atlanta, GA

I just got the order to bring an airplane to Atlanta. We plan to have 2 spare days, just in case the weather or other things stop our flight in between. If unused, I want to do some shopping and do sightseeing. So as the time is very short to find out everything in the internet (we will depart monday morning and we are still planning our trip) I thought, you may help me a little bit, especially locals.

We got booked in the Marriot downtown Hotel, near CNN, as I found out. Where can I do shopping? I am not looking for this high price stores like Gucci or Armani, just normal malls or outlet stores.
Is there a store nearby or within a shopping mall where I can buy tatting supplies? Where would you send me to? I know, best thing is still the internet.
Any suggestions for diner? We both like prime ribs.... but are there also local specalities?

Any sightseeing tips? I heard the Cocacola Museum is a must (?). CNN?
So, please no museum of pictures, modern arts.

I have to say that we won't have a car, we have to walk or use public transportation. We will land at Peachtree airport (PDK) and use a cab to the hotel, and also one for the drive to the Airport for our flight back to Switzerland.

I think, I can not make any appointments to meet and tat, at least it might be difficult as my captain will be there as well, and as usual, he does not want to seat nearby two women chatting and tatting :big grin: short term appointment maybe, but I don't know how fast the handover of the aircraft will be, and we have to finish our work first.

    Thank you for some help.
    :goodluck:Have a wonderful day :flowers:

    Hi MercyPres
Thank you for helping. I hope she gets in quickly. I don't know if I will have Internet access in Iceland and Canada during our night stops, but hopefully in Atlanta. It will take us 3 days of flying until there, so if everything goes fine, we should land in Atlanta wednesday evening. Thursday for giving the papers and so on, so Friday and Saturday would be shopping days.

Thanks again and good night from Switzerland

Hi swissgirl. Mercy called me and told me to check in here and see what I could do to help you. I'll pm you with my information. :)

We don't have a lot to offer here, only one chain store offers any variety of tatting supplies, but there are several in the area. We have another chain that can't take the hint I keep giving them -- they sell size 80 DMC tatting thread but No shuttles, No needles or anything else. All they have is the thread. I've talked to their store manager several times and tried to tell her that tatters won't buy just thread, we like to buy tatting needles and shuttles too, and even pattern books, but they won't take the hint. Oh well. :)

Looking forward to hearing from you!

[edit] Just tried to PM you and it says you need to make room in your mailbox before I can send you anything. I'll keep checking back here hoping to hear from you. Have a safe trip!

Visit the Georgia Aquarium! Right across the Coca-Cola Museum and the CNN site. It's the largest in the US (volume-wise) and the only in the world to house 3 whale sharks. It's beautiful!
The Olympic Park is a nice spot too.
And the Underground is a sort of shopping mall with historic stuff to see as well.
And of course, the Fox Theater, the churches (I love churches!), Martin Luther King's house/museum, the house where "Gone with the Wind" was written...
I've got a couple picture albums: one of Atlanta in general (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3&l=79ea01bd0b)
and one of the Aquarium (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3&l=dcca55a933)

Thanks for the information. The Aquarium looks huge! We should stay longer than two days.

Karen's right, those are some wonderful places to go. I feel sorta stupid for only going to the aquarium once and that was for a business event - we rented their ballroom. It was really nice because it sat between three of the big tanks. I haven't been to Coca Cola's museum since it moved, but it was always fun to taste test the various products from around the world. There are a few other places I would suggest. First, the Michael C Carlos Museum at Emory University ( http://carlos.emory.edu/ ) - they have a great Egyptology exhibit and an amazing Central/South American collection, and are currently hosting an exhibit of mandalas and sacred geometry. Second is the Fernbank Natural History Museum ( http://www.fernbankmuseum.org/ ) where we have a full sized IMAX screen and a HUGE dinosaur skeleton on display with a T-Rex to give some scale. Third is the BAPS Mandir ( http://www.swaminarayan.org/globalne...ca/atlanta.htm ). It's a beautiful Hindu temple, hand carved overseas and shipped here and reassembled. I'm all out of friends to hijack and take there so it'll be nice to have someone new to drag there.

In addition to King's home and church is The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change ( http://www.thekingcenter.org/ ). Not too far from that is the Carter Library and Museum ( http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.gov/ ). There's also the High Museum of Art ( http://www.high.org/ ) where they're hosting "Picasso to Warhol". Been dying to go just haven't made it yet.

Please feel free to contact me at lynn_berndt@comcast.net I live in Decatur, on the east side of Atlanta about 15 minutes from downtown. Email goes to my phone and I've gotten better about keeping it charged (it always dies at the worst time!). Hopefully you'll be busy enough that you either have to stay an extra day or will plan to come back for a longer stay. And we'll hit a HobLob and/or Michael's for thread and whatever else we can find.
