Default Trying to wrap my head around instructions.....

So I know I"m new and I'm really trying to figure this pattern out, so far I"ve been doing well... but now... I"m stuck. The pattern is Emmy Leibert fig. 37 bk1 pg2 - reprint pg 18. PAttern rewrite by Jennifer Williams... will have to dig around for the link. I've done well but now I"m confused.

I just finished "mock picot to climb out then large cloverleaf ring is a split rin: 6-5/1+6-5 RW"

    Now it says

    "SH2 5+5-5-5 RW
    Split ring: 5+5/5-5; repeat once.
Clover leafe large ring; 5+6+1+6-5, Split ring; 5+5/5-5; repeat once"

I'm confused on how this attaches to the previous round and which way I'm supposed to start. the whole SH2 part throws me off and I can't see where in the diagram where it would fit in either... Gee I hope I'm being clear... anyone able to help?

This pattern is working the whole doily in one fell swoop, no cutting the thread until the last join is made. So that means, lots of split rings and split rings need 2 shuttles.

When climbing out to the first clover, the large central ring is a split ring. Then the side rings are ALL split rings and the remaining large center rings of the clovers are normal rings worked with the shuttle that winds up on the inside of the split rings.

The last side ring of the last clover is a split ring worked 1/4 normal and 3/4 split side so that it turns left and can make the first ring of the outermost round as a split ring. The rest of the last round should be pretty normal rings and chains.

You are climbing out of the center round into the middle split ring of the first trefoil of the next round.... So once you do the center split ring you use 'shuttle #2' to tat the 'normal' side ring on one side of the trefoil, then join with the other shuttle to do the small 'split' ring on the other side. This gets you in position to do the next small 'split' ring of the next trefoil.... When you get all the way around, the last small 'split' ring (that connects to the small 'normal' ring of the first trefoil) will be as PattyD says, a 1/4 & 3/4 split ring to get in position to climb out to the first small ring of the last round. That will be a split ring also... The last split ring as all the others are linked by chains. It's a lovely little doily and a good one for learning split rings. Can't wait to see pics of your finished piece Ü

I have this pattern in my to-tat pile. And it's getting to be a larger and larger pile every day!

I think what attracted me to the pattern is the simplicity. Often in tatting, that means complicated instructions and just a bit "fussy" in working each element.

The two previous posts describe the split ring thing well. you will need to use 2 shuttles (and no ball thread) for this pattern. I would add that these patterns seem to join with more than one picot join between rounds. So, the large ring of each cloverleaf acturally joins 3 picots to the previous round. I guess she really wanted a good sturdy construction! If this still doesn't make sense, don't be shy.....ask again!

Oh, and post a picture when you have something to share. We love to cheer you on!
