Found it!! I knew I had the original. (Took me 3 days to find it in my stash). It's in "The Workbasket" magazine; September, 1954. p. 20

Tina, I just found time to read through your version of this doily. I don't see any mistakes, and your explanations are extremely clear. Love your little encouraging notes along the way too. If I were tatting this, I would use split rings and chains to climb out of each round, thus eliminating all the cuts and ties. But cutting and tying works well for anyone not yet familiar with the splits. As you say, a great doily for beginners. Thank you for sharing it with us, and for taking the time to write it up.
