Usually those cheap Chinese tatted doilies incorporate tapes; so maybe you've struck gold! I suppose it could be an example of the chemical laces where the background fabric is dissolved - but in this picture it does look hand made!
Not my area of expertise, but it looks handmade.
It looks handmade and an older doily pattern. Very nice find! Elegant and beautiful.
If you could work out the stitch count, Joy, you could replicate it in modern colours - that would be fun.
I agree that it looks handmade, but it's difficult to see clearly with the doily and background colour being so close. What does your gut tell you, Joy? You can hold it and examine it much more closely than we can. Can you tease a stitch into revealing how it's made? Try one of those picots on the outer chain and see if there is a core thread running through them. Carefully. You'll want it to return to it's shape after your investigation.

It looks similar to the Yes You Can Doily that was a challenge a few months ago.
You, know, I think twinsor you are absolutely right!

Joy, if it is NOT handmade, someone took a lot of time reviewing traditional tatting motifs and structuring them into a doily: 4 leaf clovers, 3 leaf clovers, rosette structure in the middle, the round of continuous figure 8's. If it is NOT handmade, it COULD be handmade. Enjoy your find!
