Default Help needed for anituqe pansy pattern...

Okay, I'm stumped.....usually I can take a pattern and figure it out....no matter how it is written or diagrammed.....however, I just can't seem to figure out the vintage pansy pattern from page 20 of the Dover "Tatting Patterns" book by Sanders (a reprint of "The Priscilla Tatting Book #2", published in 1915, figure #45, page 17).... http://www.georgiaseitz.com/public/pris2.pdf

    These things have me puzzled:
Is it done in parts as picture #46 suggest (however the directions don't seem to be saying this)?
Why does it have two different instructions for "small petal"?
Am I having trouble because I am trying to translate to needle and there is something I am missing about the shuttle pattern?

Has anyone made this? Better yet has anyone written a modernized version of the pattern?
If you don't know where you are going any road will get you there.

I've had a quick look through the pattern and I'm quite sure the petals are done separately. The reason for the second small petal is purely the different colour outer edge....my only puzzlement is that it says to carry on the lavender to the other petals. I'm assuming that you have to finish off the small petal outer edge first and then start again with the next size petal. That would be the way I would tackle it, but without actually tatting it, I couldn't be 100% sure.

I have made this and I'm trying to remember what I did. The second set of instructions simply explains the final row of ds or scallops for each petal before the edge is done. I followed the pattern as printed and just went from petal to petal as written. It made for some very tight work as you are doing a lot of joining to the same picots but it is do-able. My finished piece is in my album if you would like to see it. It is a stunning piece when completed and all this talk about it gives me the desire to go at it again.

I peeked at your pansy, Mrsdrlow, and it is amazing. I have that book, but hadn't thought of making it. Seeing it done up in color sure changes my mind about tatting it up.

Thank you very much and I would strongly encourage you to give it a whirl as it is just beautiful when complete.

I have the book, tried the pattern, and decided my skill wasn't up to the task at the time. Perhaps it's time to revisit. Especially when I saw the post on Marilee's blog.

Georgia told me one time to try and draw it as I read the pattern and if I could draw it I could tat it......I'm still lost.....I just can't seem to "see" the steps to even draw it.

Leah, yours is lovely. I really like the button too.....I have a small rinestone button that was in my mother-in-laws sewing box (that I inherited when she passed away) that I would like to put in the middle of mine....that is if and when I get it tatted.

Marilee Rockley's version of it is gorgeous! I've been working through the patterns in the Priscilla books and modernizing the instructions on snapdragonlace.com, but I haven't gotten to this one yet. It's on my list of things to try soon, but it's on there with about 20 others. :) Post pictures of yours when you're done. I'd love to see it!

Snapdragon Lace has been concentrating on the Priscilla books. Elsewhere she recently described one she's working on and that she is modernizing the patterns.

Well, if I'd read to the end I'd know... Snapdragon... are you still doing classes in Piecemakers?
