Flower Doily

[Frivole]

I have used this edging once before but I thought it was so pretty that I made another doily with it.



I really like those colours together: the zingy Spring Green combined with Tropical Punch (both Lizbeth threads in size 20).



I attached it using crochet after making holes in my fabric with a wing needle on my sewing machine.

I love this edging, Frivole, and have a copy of Tatter's Treasure Chest with the pattern. Yours looks a bit different (much prettier). Can you tell me what changes you made.

It's so beautiful - just gorgeous. Are those lumps of sugar in the picture?
I'd like to ask about the crochet attachment - how did you do that? - because I can see a thin border of white fabric, and so it doesn't seem like ordinary single crochet into the holes - did you use a special stitch?

Hi Janet, first of all, I think the edging in the book has been "stretched a bit as it is flat at the bottom instead of curved as a chain should be. Also the sample is tatted more loosely than mine I would say. The only change I actually did make is to shorten the "stalk": the pattern states 6 ds and I did 4 only. I thought it looked nicer and also made a prettier diamond shape between the flowers. Oh, also, the pattern doesn't have a joining picot (for attaching to fabric afterwards) in the chain at the bottom so I added one: so instead of 6+12-6 for the bottom chain, I did 6+6-6-6.

Hi Maureen, yes, brown sugar lumps. I buy them in France when we visit, more fun than just cubes! I have them in white sugar too.

And Judy, I wish they were MAPLE sugar lumps - that would make me a very happy lady indeed!! :-))

Hi Maureen, just realised I forgot to answer your main question! I traced the oval shape on a piece of fabric and then with my sewing machine I made holes (with a wing needle or a very large one) all along the oval outline. Then I used a crochet hook and the same green thread in size 20 and went from the top, a bit like a sewing machine motion really.

As usual, the tatting and the doily are superb. One query. If one does not have a sewing machine, do you have any pointers about evenly spacing holes for crocheting? The few things I've done, I've just eyeballed it. Since these were bookmarks, the spacing wasn't exactly crucial, but if doing something larger, I'd need to make sure things are really even. Haven't really given it a lot of thought, but wondered what kind of pointers you might have.
