    Hi Lynn,

    I recently made this handkerchief:

I didn't use a sewing machine for that one and just attached as I went. Like you, I eye-balled it. So if not with a sewing machine then I tend to do as you do and have made lots of handkerchiefs in the past with crochet edgings (not so much tatting then) and I always used to eye-ball it and push my crochet straight through the fabric as I went.

Otherwise, you could use a water-soluble marker and a ruler and mark little dots, evenly spaced.

The pictures show it all very clearly, thank you for the link! So what you are doing is chain stitching into the holes with the crochet hook. Your work is so precise - I'm happy to understand how it's done, but it would not look like that if I tried it!

Thanks, Joëlle. I like eyeballing it anyway, because I'm always afraid the previously made holes won't line up precisely with the tatted picots. I don't really do much with attached edgings, but I have a special incentive now. My son informed us a couple of weeks ago that we'll need to be back in the States in three years for his wedding! So, I'm starting to play with ideas for his bride. One would think there's plenty of time, right? But this is tatting. Is there such a think a "plenty of time"? I should think faster and get started. Oops, just remembered who I'm talking to. Time isn't such a bugbear for you, fast as you tat. But for me... yeah, I'd better get started soon.

You'll be fine. Plenty of time. You can always start with things in white until... or maybe she's already selected colors?

Defintely white! My newest daughter-in-law's wedding colours were navy and white. Firstly, it was terribly hard to match the navy, eventually Jon sent me some Olympus 40; and secondly, I was so ecstatic to have the thread that I never gave a thought to later having to turn the hanky into a baby bonnet! What if the baby had been a girl? - Fortunately it was a boy. His parents were kind enough to place the bonnet on his head just long enough to take a picture for me as they were leaving the hospital. Very gratifying.
