If the file is very large, it does take time because the upload also compresses the photo. You can speed up the process by getting the pictures under 1M by changing the picture form.. jpg from tiff, or cropping them, before you upload.

I have the photos cropped to 250 x 250 pixels each. I have no clue as to how this is size wise to the 1M that you speak of. I have them in JPG format.
