    Default vintage pattern

i have just started this pattern from "a new twist in tatting" but true to form for this book the pattern is wrong and the picture is not good so i cant see the detail.
it is on line for a price but i don't want to pay for public domain material.

has any got this pattern please.

Most of the patterns in this book were copied from Julie Sanders "A Pattern Book of Tatting" (#3, I think). Perhaps you can find it in there? If you give the page number from "new twist," someone may be able to match it.

I believe this is the 'Oval Doily', pattern #5, on p. 69 of "New Twist". I've been thinking of making it myself. What errors have you found in the pattern?

yes that is right. It may just be the way it is written and my interpretation. the first row makes no sense to me at all. so I would be interested to hear what others think of this pattern (perhaps it is just my inexperience) I should try it her way then if that does not work try this.

    make a small ring
    now a chain
    make a large ring
    now a chain
make a small ring joining this ring @ the 1st picot to the last picot of the previous small ring.
    now a chain
now a large ring joining this ring @ the 1st picot to the last picot of the previous large ring
    repeat 12 times.

I am now on the turn but again i can't make sense of the pattern i have unpicked it three times so far (and will probably have to start again because the thread is looking the worse for ware) so if anyone who can decipher it i would be so grateful. I really hate having to give up

Diane (Lace-lovin' Librarian) started this doily in two colours. She blogs about it HERE: http://lacelovinlibrarian.blogspot.d...val-doily.html

Perhaps that can help you to decipher the beginning of the pattern.

I do find long hand written patterns always intimidating. So I never did a pattern from that book which I own several years now...

I've found most of the patterns in the New Twist book have multiple errors. I tatted this doily several years ago, and struggled with it every step of the way. It's still unfinished for two reasons. The thread I was using developed some bleached out portions towards the end of the ball - very distressing. Once I got to the final round, I simply threw in the towel. I tried that round several times and could not make any sense at all of the instructions. I've been thinking about trying again. This thread is a good catalyst for me to take another stab at it - hopefully with thread that is not damaged in the middle.

Lynn i am so pleased you have posted

I know that i am relatively new to the craft- but i don't consider myself to be stupid and this book makes me feel stupid So your insight is really encouraging.

perhaps as a group we could take on this pattern and get it cracked and rewritten- after all it is really pretty and would be be a shame to lose it because no one can crack the written version.

It is available for sale here

    http://www.ioffer.com/i/oval-doily-v...tern-140720237

she makes money by selling public domain patterns coincidently the same seller of the vintage wedge doily
