Thank you, Rachael. I will gather my gumption and give it a try. I'm so grateful to have your advice!

Oh, Rachael, I am not getting it right, and I am so frustrated! I tatted the first ring and first part of the chain. Then, I switched to the second needle. I had already threaded that needle with extra thread before I started. I put my double stitches for the floating ring on the second needle and made a nice ring--but it's completely separate from the work on my first needle! DUH! I know I'm not doing this right, but I don't know what I should do.
Do you think you could explain this in really basic steps for me? I think the " cut from the ball thread" term is what I'm messing up. Before I started this project, I cut thread from the ball and threaded it onto the second needle. It sounded like I'd need a lot of thread on that second needle, so I wound a bunch on a bobbin to use with that needle. Was that wrong? I guess I don't understand what it means to cut thread from the ball for the second needle.
I wish I could sit next to you while you show me. I imagine others could get quite a chuckle out of how I've distorted and misinterpreted the helpful tips I've received. I still want to make the pretty pattern, though. Sigh.
I had the same problems with the same pattern. It is difficult to figure out how to do floating rings off of chains! I can't do it yet... : (

Ferhoodled. . .what a perfect description for how I feel sometimes when trying to learn a technique! If anyone can get you unferhoolded, it's Rachael!

Rachael has made a video on a different thread showing how to do this floating rings technique for needles. I think this thread got finished, or continued there. Hope you got your angels finished. Let us know. Later readers... look for "floating" or "thrown rings" for needle tatters.
Ellen, your second needle should be threaded on the opposite end of the thread your first needle is on. It is one continuous length of thread, not two separate threads.

Thank you, Rachael. Her video, which I think did wind up in a different thread that also connected with this topic, was extremely helpful! I sat down at the computer with my needles and thread, and I made a floating ring! Then, I looked at the next part of the pattern, and I decided it should be on hold until I have developed a little more expertise. It's always great to have something to which to look forward!
Hooray! One floater accomplished!
