    Default Queen of Hearts

    Someone just recently posted a picture of the Queen of Hearts from "Tatting with Hearts" by Teri Dusenbury. I'm sorry, I should have written that person's name down right then, but I was in a rush.
    I tried to make that one and I didn't know what I was doing. I'd posted questions on it a long while ago, but still don't know how to do it.
    I don't know how to introduce the third shuttle. Has anyone made that motif?

    Sorry, I'm not familier with that pattern by Teri Dusenbury..... the only 'Queen of Hearts' pattern I know is the one by Mary Konior... I'll have to look into it.

    I have not done this but I just looked at the pattern, and I'm confused also. It looks like you should be able to do this with two shuttles since it is all rings and split-rings. It appears that she is only using the 3rd shuttle when she tats the Half Daisy on each side, "SR S1 R2-1-1-2, using shuttle three LHK 3+(j to base of center DR)3. End off S3" (Figure 5 in the bottom right corner of page 17 shows S3) It doesn't make sense to me to add a third shuttle thread to a split ring just to make a join and then tie it off. Perhaps I am reading it wrong (entirely possible!) I like the looks of Teri's patterns when they are tatted up, but I find her directions difficult to follow. I hope someone who has done this can explain because I'm really curious now.
    I'd also like to know which ring on the "butterfly" she considers to be the "butterfly's butt."

    Yes, I'd like to know how to introduce that third shuttle. Jane Ebroall said to throw off the ring. But I'm still confused. I didn't get as far as the butterfly's butt.

    She is very specific in writing her patterns as technically correct, but for a beginner it can be very confusing. I have done several of her hearts from this book that, if following her directions, would have had many ends to hide, yet by studying the diagram I did with one pass and only 2 ends to hide. If you know how to do a thrown ring on a split ring it is possible to do this half daisy with just 2 shuttles. For the "Queen of Hearts" I would also do just one pass. (As written would have 16 ends to hide!) Unfortunately due to copyrights I cannot do a diagram, but will try to explain so you can follow if you have the book.
    Begin with the butterfly labeled A making the large ring without the A in it followed by the medium, butt, medium and A ring. Make the tiny ring(head) a split ring.
    Start the flower with a split ring, do one ring with shuttle 1, five rings with shuttle 2, and the last as a split ring.
    Do butterfly B by starting the head with a split ring, large ring-med ring-butt-med ring with shuttle 2, last large ring is a split ring.
    Start the outer section with the 1 at the top middle as a split ring going around to the right with split rings and when you get to the half daisy do the rings labeled 12,13,14 as thrown rings with shuttle 2.
    Do rings 16,17,18 as split rings-ring 19 with shuttle 1-ring 23, head of the butterfly and ring 21 with shuttle 2-ring 20 as a split ring.
    Continue around the outside with the bottom left rings 1 and 2 as split rings-ring. 6 as a split ring with 3,4,5 as thrown rings with shuttle 2.
    Finally complete the last 10 split rings.
    You will need to pay attention to the stitch counts to make them in the right order when splitting in a different place and watching where to join, but it IS possible to do it with only 2 ends to hide. It is still the same number of stitches just a different order of doing them. You may have to pay more attention also to the frontside/backside of the stitches. I hope this makes sense to those that have the book.

    Jane Eborall has a pdf for ring on split ring for shuttle tatters.

    For needle tatters use 2 needles or move one needle between threads. I made demo videos for ring on split ring with 2 needles;

    And for one needle;

    The butt is the ring with just a 5 in it by the way. The head has just a 3

    Thank you so much, Rachel. It will take me awhile, but I will give this another try and keep in touch with you on the progress. I'm slow, but it bugs me when I can't do something, so I'll tackle it again. Thank you again.

    Thank you, Rachael, for taking time to post this helpful information. Jane's PDF is wonderful. I just never thought of "throwing a ring" off a split ring, but I can see how that increases design possibilities.
    Cheryl, I am really looking forward to seeing your finished "Queen of Hearts" by Teri.

    I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. I love that particular pattern and will try it someday. Racheal's way looks much better. Sixteen tails to hide is overwhelming!
    I've tatted a couple of Teri's snowflake patterns, but I didn't follow the directions exactly. I was pleased with the outcome, though.
