    Default Japanese Shuttle Tatting Books

I have heard that Japanese tatting books are quite impressive. However, no one can actually describe for me the types of patterns inside them. Sometimes the books offered online have descriptions such as "edgings, doilies, & motifs included" but they do not say what kind of motifs. I am at this point mostly interested in motifs, then edgings. I will eventually tat doilies but not for a while yet. Does anyone have any of these Japanese tatting books? If so, can you possibly tell me exactly the types of motifs that are in a particular book?

From what I see on google images, they look different than normal tatting. More shaped tatting, if that makes sense. Less round things, or maybe thats just the book covers!

I've been looking to buy some too!

Some of the Japanese tatting books available on e-bay have LOTS of pictures...compared to HHtatting, which only shows the cover.

I own several Japanese tatting books. They range from very basic to very advanced. For example, books by Teiko Fujito and her daughter (also Fujito) are the most advanced (Tatted Fashion, Tatted artistry, and two under the title Tatting lace) They feature many many motifs and combination of motifs to form doilies and shawls and edgings and purses. Work from 1 shuttle to 3 shuttles. I fully recommend these four for the advanced tatter.
Then comes Tatting lace by Fujishige Sumi, Tatting lace by Hisayo Sugita, and Tatting ideas and A new Approach to tatting by Yusai Shokoin. Small simple motifs that grow into small doilies, some jewellery, beautiful tulle and tatting shawls and fans, purses, necks and cuffs, cell phone holders, hankies, baby stuff, even framed art. Looks intimidating but the tatting techniques featured are simple. These books are for the intermediate tatter.
And finally, a plethora of books featuring small motifs and projects. Unfortunately most of them are titled Tatting lace (I don't speak Japanese so I can't determine if there is more info on the covers) but if you're interested in seeing the covers let me know. Some authors: Hajimete No, Tatako Kitano. Good for the beginner.
    HOpe this helps.

Umm "Hajimete No" is not the authors name, but part of the title. "Hajimete no Tatingu Resu" = the first of tatting lace, or as we would phrase it the beginning book of tatting lace. Sumie is the author.

From what I have and have seen - Japanese tatting patterns tend to be more...frilly or loos. Kind of the opposite of Mary Konior. Most books have a combination of items, but you can easily just do things like the center of a larger piece of turn the edging into a bookmark. All text is in Japanese, but they have very good diagrams.

I have Tatting Lace by Fujishige Sumi. I haven't tried anything from it yet. I just wanted to add that the book is beautifully presented, with colour pictures and diagrams on separate pages. I don't know Japanese, but I hope it won't be too difficult to follow the diagrams.

I have several. Each offers something different.. But they are all wonderful and you cannot go wrong with any of them. One takes a simple small motif and builds on it over several pages so you have a placemat or larger doily.

Lacis has a few Japanese books and gives a small description of what they contain.

Lacis seems a bit high for most of the books compared to e-bay prices. The Teiko Fujito books are pretty, but the motifs are nicer to look at than they are to make.

I have a few too. the patterns are beautifully presented. I could pick out some words because some of it are Chinese characters so even if I don't really know how to read the whole thing, I get the gist of it. So far I haven't done any patterns yet, I am working with the patterns in other books I have. One of the recent one I purchased, I think it combines macrame as well in the tatting. One of these days, I am going to look at them closely.
Try, try, and try again...until the out come is presentable at least.....gc
